Use Google Data Studio

Business Benefits

Gain a better understanding of your business metrics.

Connect one of the Google Data Studio templates to your data to familiarize yourself with the tool.

  1. Go to datastudio.google.com.
  2. Select one of the templates listed under Start with a template.
  3. Click on Use template. If you use Google Data Studio for the same time, accept the terms and conditions and specify your email preferences.
  4. Select Google Ads from the drop-down menu under New Data Source. If you don’t have your own dataset yet, you can use one of Google’s sample datasets.
  5. Click on Copy report.

Google Data Studio will load a new version of the report using your Google Ads data.

To replace a metric in a chart, click on Edit, click on the chart you want to change, then click on the metric in the side toolbar and select a new metric to use.

For example, if you chose the Google Ads Overview Report, to change device breakdown to country breakdown, select the Clicks chart under the Device breakdown title and replace Device with Country code. Click on View to save and return to the report.

To edit chart titles once you’ve changed their metrics, click Edit, double-click on the chart title, and change it.

Click on View to save the report.

To change a chart type, click Edit, select the chart you want to change, click on the Chart type at the top of the side toolbar and select a new type.

Click on View to save the report. For example, if you wanted to change a pie chart to a doughnut chart, you would click on the chart, click on Chart > Pie, select the Doughnut chart icon, then click View.

To build a new report from new data, click on the Data Studio icon > Blank report then select a data source and select the specific data you want to use.

For example, if you select Google Analytics, you’ll need to choose an account, property, and view. Click Add to report to open a blank Google Data Studio sheet with your data source loaded.

Add scorecards to your report to show a top-level overview of the metrics that are most important to you.

In the top navigation bar, click on Insert > Scorecard and drop the new scorecard on the sheet. In the side toolbar, click on the blue drop down list under metrics and select the metric that you want to display for example, revenue. Repeat this step to add scorecards for other metrics. Click on the View button to save and return to the report.

Add a timeline chart to demonstrate how your metrics change over time.

  1. In the top navigation bar, click on Insert > Time series and drop the new chart on the sheet.

  3. In the side toolbar, click on the blue button under Metrics and select the metric that you want to display for example, revenue.
  4. Click on the View button to save and return to the report.

Add a filter to your view so that you can dynamically adjust the range of data displayed in the whole sheet.

In the top navigation bar, click on Insert > Date range filter and drop the filter on the sheet. Click on the View button to save and return to the report. You can now adjust the data range and apply this filter to the entire data in the sheet.

Customize your report to fit your company’s branding by adding a logo and create a report theme from an image.

  1. In the top navigation bar, click on Insert > Image and draw the placement and size of the image placeholder on the sheet.
  2. In the side toolbar, click on Select a file and upload the image that you want to place on the report.
  3. Click on an empty space in the sheet. The theme and layout menu will display in the side toolbar. Click on Extract theme from image at the bottom of the toolbar, select Upload from computer, and select the image you want to use. Typically, you’ll use your company logo for this too.
