Business Benefits

Improve tracking and analysis of critical visitor data on your website.

Navigate to the Admin Settings page and click on Upgrade to GA4 under Property Settings.

If the upgrade option is not available, you can design a GA4 property under Create Property. Skip to the fourth step once you finish the setup.

Click on Get Started to begin the setup wizard. The options available to you will depend on your existing GA setup.

The setup wizard can use your existing tags to enable data collection if you currently implement UA using global site tags. However, the following steps will help you enable data collection through Google Tag Manager if you don’t.

Generate a measurement ID to start data collection for the new GA4 property. Click on > next to Tag Installation to enter the menu.

Select the website or app that you’re planning to track for reporting and click on Add Stream to expand the dropdown menu under Data Streams.

Instead of views, GA4 features data streams that measure events like site search, scrolls, file downloads, outbound link clicks, and more.

Select either iOS app, Android app, or Web depending on what you need to track. In our example, we’ll select Web because we need website tracking.

Enter the name of the website in Stream Name and enter the Website URL, then click on Create Stream and copy the measurement ID displayed.

You will need this for the GA4 configuration set up in Google Tag Manager*.*

Set up and install Tag Manager, then go to tagmanager.google.com and create a new account or use an existing one. Add the container code to your website as directed by the Install Google Tag Manager pop up window and click OK.

Click on New Tag > Add a New Tag. Enter Google Analytics for the title, click on Tag Configuration and select Google Analytics: GA4 Configuration from Tag Type.

Click on the variable icon and select Create new Variable > Variable Configuration. Select Constant from Utilities, enter the GA4 measurement ID, configure it to work on All Pages and click on Save.

Although you can enter the measurement ID manually, it’s better to create a constant variable. This helps you reference your measurement ID when using other tags.

Test your setup before going live by clicking Preview in Tag Manager.

  1. A banner will appear across the top of the page to indicate the mode is active. To exit the preview mode, click on Workspace > Leave Preview Mode.
  2. Once you’re sure that the data is coming through properly, publish your tag. When it’s live, open the GA4 Realtime report by navigating to your view > Reports > Realtime.
