Here, you will find all comments published on your videos and comments held for review.
Take the time to engage with comments during this process to increase the productivity of the task. Engaging with audiences will help develop a recurring viewer base.
The content of these comments is rarely helpful for analysis, and so should be removed from the main list to focus on the valuable comments. Take note of the rate of these comments’ appearance, though. If they are a repeated problem, something about your content may be attracting them. Find patterns in videos that have a high rate of these comments and find commonalities. Often, spam is invited by keywords or phrases in the description, tags, or title of your videos.
Look for recurring keywords, phrases, and ideas to identify common sentiments among the commenting audience.
If you notice a repeated phrase, use the Filter tool to list all instances and get a count of its recurrence. Some things to look for are emotional sentiments or comments that reveal demographic information about the viewers.
Use the Filter tool to isolate comments with questions. Take note of common questions and respond if you have an answer.
The Filter tool can be used by clicking the three horizontal lines to the top left of the Comments page, below the Published and Held for Review tabs. This will show you these built-in filters:
- Contains questions: Questions indicate a desire to engage as well as provide direct feedback. Use questions to learn where you should elaborate more in future videos.
- Public subscribers: Will show only comments from accounts that are subscribed to you.
- Channel member status: Lets you toggle between comments from channel members and non-members.
- Subscriber count: Allows you to input a minimum subscriber number. Only comments from accounts that meet that subscriber minimum will show. This is good to sort out spam or find feedback from your most high-profile followers, which can help you expand through their influence.
- Response status: Shows comments that you have or haven’t already responded to.
You can also use the Search filter to search for specific terms in comments.
Many viewers will not go through the effort of leaving a comment, but their thoughts and preferences can be communicated through other methods. Comments with large numbers of likes represent the sentiments of many of your viewers. If these comments contain feedback, you should definitely plan to implement the feedback or address it in some form.
Track the rate of comments added: go to Analytics > Advanced Mode. In the primary metric drop-down box, select More Metrics > Comments Added.
The data visualization tool will give you a more quantitative measure of your audience engagement. View the evolution of comment frequency on your videos and use this to track the videos and time periods that attract engaged viewers the most.
Implement feedback into future videos and create specific tasks to add to your upcoming marketing and distribution plan.
Here are some examples of ways you can implement your comment analysis findings:
- Create more videos similar to previous videos with high comment counts.
- If comments have indicated you are attracting an audience from a specific location, cater to audiences of that location.
- Adjust your video format if comments have identified something that distracts them.
