Increase Twitter followers organically

Business Benefits

Attract a larger and more relevant audience for your content.

Review or research the demographics and interests of your current and ideal Twitter followers.

Define your Twitter account’s value proposition, or the reason your audience should follow you, instead of others in your industry.

Optimize your business account profile, like with a branded profile picture and bio, based on your brand and your account’s value proposition.

Create a regular Tweet publication schedule that matches your audience’s preferences and behavior.

Post content that is:

  • Personal or humorous, where appropriate.
  • Entertaining, helpful, or inspirational.

Make your content about your audience and not your brand to get their attention.

Engage with replies, retweets, direct messages, and mentions your account receives.

To encourage engagement:

  • Ask questions.
  • Open polls.
  • Run competitions.
  • Set challenges.

Research and use Twitter hashtags that are relevant for your brand and industry.

Post visual content to make your Tweets more engaging and shareable.

Refine your brand voice to match your audience’s and Twitter’s preferred, conversational tone.

Promote your Twitter account in other marketing channels like your website and emails.

Regularly review your account’s Twitter Analytics to understand which content has led to noticeable increases in organic followers.

It would be interesting to explore how to encourage replies and retweets. This applies to all social media, really. The more people talk to you, and you reply to them, the more invested they are and the more likely they are to share your content.

Asking questions is a good start. But you can also use polls, run competitions, set challenges. It also helps to post personal content and use humor too. That makes the channel feel more personal and encourages interaction.

Posting entertaining, helpful, or inspirational content is a big factor too. Too many Twitter channels seem to be an endless stream of news nobody cares about.

I also think we can be somewhat delusional about what people will find interesting. Our content needs to be about our audience and not us if we want their attention.

Thanks @boagworld – I’ve incorporated these points into the playbook.
