Conduct Google keyword research to find popular search terms for recommendations on products and services like yours.

When using Google to find products or services like yours, people tend to explore and evaluate their options using best X queries, for example:

  • Best CRM.
  • Best fitness tracker.
  • Best salons in Dublin.
  • Best restaurants in Boston.

Sometimes, they drop the best off, and search for a broad transactional category, for example:

  • Marketing automation software.
  • Hotels in Tallinn.
  • Language learning apps.

People also look for alternatives to what they are already using:

  • Canva alternatives.
  • Mailchimp competitors.

Start your keyword research by thinking how your audience might be looking for products and services such as yours. Here are a few patterns to start from:

  • best + product category
  • top + product category
  • best + product category + industry
  • product + alternatives
  • alternatives to + product
  • product category

Build a list of keywords starting from the patterns above. Then, expand your list of keywords to include as many variations as possible. Ubersuggest is a free SEO tool that generates keyword ideas based on the key-term you enter. Make sure you add a generic key-term like best CRM, to get other popular related expressions and expand your keyword list.

UbersuggestYou can perform a similar keyword research using other SEO tools like Ahrefs, SEMRush, and MOZ. The goal is to get a list of relevant keywords and their search volume, so you can prioritize your activities later.

Get the Google top 10 results for each keyword and add the URLs to a spreadsheet.

Alternatively, use an SEO tool like Ahrefs, SEMRush, or MOZ to speed up this process. If you use Ahrefs, go to Keywords Explorer, get the SERP results for each keyword, and export them as a CSV.

AhrefsAdd all the top 10 results from each keyword into one spreadsheet like in the example below:

Position in SERP, Domain Rating (DR) and Traffic are provided by the Keyword Explorer tool from Ahrefs. Traffic is a metric by Ahrefs and it represents the estimated monthly organic traffic. You can use this, or a similar estimate for another tool, to prioritize reaching out to the websites or pages that get the most organic traffic month over month. Before moving to the next step, make sure you remove the duplicates. If you’re using Google Sheets, go to Data > Remove duplicates.

Check if the URLs in your list already mention your product and link back to your website.

Use spreadsheets and the IMPORTXML formula, to check if each URL contains a link to your site or a mention of your brand name.

Only keep the URLs that don’t mention your brand already. The goal is to reach out to them and pitch your product or service to be added to the list.

Organize the list by domain and reach out to the domains that have the most lists appearing in SERP, as well as the highest amount of monthly organic traffic.

Use a pivot formula in your spreadsheet to organize your list by domain.

Find the right contact for each domain, and reach out to them to pitch your product or service to be added to their list.

When you face rejection, propose an affiliate deal or ask what it would take for them to consider adding your product. This won’t help your link building campaign directly, but it will help your business overall to get exposure.
